Chapter 1 - The 'fundamentals' of lasers and IPLs

Here, we will introduce various concepts that you really should know, if you are performing laser/IPL treatments – some very basic, fundamental stuff!

This chapter discuses:

  • Basics of light – wavelength, energy, power,

  • What is a laser? Basic designs.

  • What is an IPL?

  • Basics of treatment parameters – fluence, spot size, absorption, scattering

  • The importance of ‘Power Density’

  • The ‘Fitzpatrick’ Scale, perceived skin colour and melanin absorption

  • Which is ‘better’ – laser or IPLs?

  • An introduction to Laser/IPL Hair Removal

  • An introduction to Laser Tattoo Removal

  • An introduction to Laser/IPL Blood Vessel & Pigmentation Removal

  • Laser safety and safety glasses

  • An introduction to the basics of light-skin interactions

  • Depth of penetration

  • Thermal relaxation time

  • Class 1, 2, 3 and 4 lasers

  • MPE, AEL, NOHZ

  • Choosing the correct safety glasses

  • A ‘laser-safe’ environment

  • Laser clinic risk assessment

  • Laser/IPL Plume – the hazards

Plus ‘How to Buy a Laser/IPL’ and ‘What can these systems really treat?’

Chapter 2 - Laser Tattoo Removal

In this chapter we discuss the science behind laser tattoo removal including the technology, tattoo inks, the formation tattoos, how different coloured inks react to the different wavelengths, skin tones, number of sessions required and the time between repeat sessions.

We look at Q-switched and picosecond lasers and the differences between them.

Chapter 3 - Laser/IPL Hair Removal

In this chapter we talk about the removal of hair using light energy form both lasers and IPLs.

We investigate the effects of fluence, wavelengths, pulsewidths and spot sizes on treatment outcomes. We also discuss skin tone and hair colours, and how these might affect treatments. In addition, we discuss the results for our computer modelling work which looks at the effect of fluence and the optimum timings between treatment sessions.
